A "senior" is considered an animal that is in the last third of its expected lifespan. Most dogs and cats are considered seniors after reaching the age of 7. Some, especially larger breeds, even earlier, around 5-6 years. For this period, some issues that arise in dogs (and cats) are quite common and similar to those in humans. Due to decreased physical activity, bone density may be reduced (making them more fragile), movement is more difficult and slower, and joints stiffen. The functioning of some organs, such as the heart, kidneys, and liver, is also reduced. The immune system also weakens with age, making older dogs more prone to various infections.
